Genealogy of a Song: Voo-doo

The Voo-doo song first appears on the live split 7" released on Cass records:

This version was recorded live the 07/27/2007 at the The Grand Opera House in Wimington, Delaware, when Dan Sartain was opening for the White Stripes during their 2007 US and Canada tour.

Voo-doo was then recorded during the studio session for the Dan Sartain Lives album and appears on the third OneLittleIndian Sartain LP.

The split live 7" is sold out so if you give me your email adress I can send you the mp3.

Genealogy of a Song: Atheist Funeral

There is at least 3 versions for Atheist Funeral. You can still hear a live demo version of the song on Dan myspace. Then Dan was invited to record a version of this song at Third Man Records and with Jack White touch, the song became slower. You can hear the result on Bohemian Grove 7" released by Third Man Records.
Then, a third version was recorded for the Dan Sartain Lives LP. This version is close to the live demo and at maximum speed!

Genealogy of a Song: Hangers On

You surely all know Hangers On, the song on Join Dan Sartain LP. But as Gun vs. Knife, this song was first recorded for the 7" on Cass Records:

As you can see, Hangers On is not in the tracklist. In fact, the demo name of that song is Leeches 2 which is the follow-up of leeches p.t.I, the song of Dan vs. The Serpientes.

As for Gun vs. Knife, the song was re-recorded in a cleaner version with a drum intro and was added to the Join Dan Sartain LP tracklist.

The Gun vs. Knife 7" can still be found on ebay but it's sold out in regular stores. If you give me your email adress I will send you the mp3.

Genealogy of a Song: Gun vs. Knife

Dan Sartain first recorded this song as a title track for a 7" on Cass Records. This 7" also features two other tracks: Leeches 2 (we will talk about this one in a further article) and When You See Me Coming.
Gun vs. Knife was then re-recorded in a clean version with a drum intro and was added to the Join Dan Sartain LP tracklist.

The Gun vs. Knife 7" can still be found on ebay but it's sold out in regular stores. If you ask kindly I can send you the mp3.

Genealogy of a Song

A lot of the songs we can listen on the three Dan Sartain albums (vs Serpientes, Join & Lives) were sometines previously released on one of his three first LPs (Crimson Guard, Romance in Stereo and Family Legacy) or as a bside of a 7" and they are often quite different.

In this new category, "Genealogy of a Song", I will try to help you to find the first versions of some of these songs and give you links to download them (when possible) or to buy them.
